THE WORLD PLAYS TRIBUTE TO THE MIGHTY

The sound system community were devastated when news of the death of the legendary reggae pioneer aka 'Zulu Warrior' was announced. Dubbed as the ‘king of sound systems,’ Shaka was seen by many as the greatest soundman of all time. He released some of the most seminal records after spearheading the influential Jah Shaka Sound System in the 1970s. Throughout his career, he was known for his commitment to social and political consciousness. He was undoubtedly the last of the greats, an inspirational leader who continued to perform and tour his system right up to his death.

UK sound history
With the migration of Jamaicans to the UK in the late 50’s & 60’s the tradition of ‘Sound Systems’ was also exported. Early UK 'Sound System’ operators had a huge following and from these early sounds developed many new ones encompassing new ideas and directions.

An intimate look at the evolution of sound system culture
Back in 1950s Jamaica, a fellow by the name of Hedley Jones, who was fuelled by a passion for music, developed the first sound system. His "Houses of Joy" as he liked to call them, helped spark an entire culture.
